GIVING A TEMPO (Part 3)
Most actors panic when the tempo comes in wrong. They try to “fix it” mid-performance, or worse, they push through and hope no one notices. That’s not control, that’s survival mode.
WHAT TO DO WHEN THEY PLAY THE TEMPO WRONG
That dreaded moment when the accompanist starts your song and it’s the wrong tempo.
Too fast, too slow, or just not what you set.
It happens more often than actors expect, and how you handle it can either throw you off completely or reveal a level of professionalism most actors never show.
OPTION 1: STOP AND RESET
This is the professional move.
If you catch it early, stop. Politely. Cleanly. Without drama.
“Sorry, can we take that again a touch slower?” Then re-give the tempo — point, sing, tap — and go.
No one is docking you points for this. They’re clocking how you handle it.
But this only works early on. First third of the song? Totally fine. Last few bars? Let it go.
If you’ve already delivered the material, restarting just muddies the impression.
OPTION 2: LEAD FROM YOUR BODY
You can try to guide the accompanist.
Push the tempo forward with your energy, or sit back and slow it down.
But this only works if the style allows flexibility.
If it’s groove-based — pop/rock/R&B — the accompanist is trained to lock the groove. They won’t chase you.
That’s why this option is less reliable than you think.
OPTION 3: COMMIT TO THE NEW REALITY
Sometimes you just ride it.
If you can live in that tempo, commit fully.
Especially in styles where interplay and spontaneity are part of the language.
But be honest — most of the time, the wrong tempo undercuts your work.
WHAT THEY’RE ACTUALLY WATCHING
This isn’t just about tempo. It’s about how you behave under pressure.
Do you communicate clearly? Do you collaborate? Do you stay grounded when something goes off plan?
That’s the audition inside the audition.
🥜 IN A NUTSHELL
If the tempo’s wrong early — stop and fix it.
READY TO DIVE DEEPER?
This is such a nuanced topic that I made a part one, a part two, and a part three! And beyond giving a tempo, here’s everything else you need to set your song up with an accompanist.
