Actors don’t get rejected for being messy. They get rejected for being forgettable. The industry doesn’t reward perfection, it responds to presence. When your work is too polished, it often loses the very thing that makes it land: your humanity.
WHY PERFECTION ISN’T THE GOAL
Actors are often taught, implicitly or explicitly, that if everything is just right — the vocal placement, the lighting, the headshot — then the yes will come.
I’m a Broadway acting coach, and that’s not how it works.
Precision matters. Craft matters. But perfection, as a goal, works against you. It pulls you out of the moment and into control.
And control reads as distance.
WHAT MAKES WORK MEMORABLE
There’s a Japanese philosophy called Wabi Sabi: the idea that things are most compelling when they’re imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.
That same principle applies to performance.
The actors who book are the ones who let their humanity show. Not in a chaotic or unfocused way, but in a way that allows for texture, breath, and unpredictability.
That’s what makes someone memorable.
WHEN CLEAN BECOMES EMPTY
A flawless take can read as robotic. Everything is in place, but nothing feels like it’s happening.
A slightly messy take, on the other hand, often carries thought. You can see the actor processing, adjusting, responding. It feels alive.
The same is true in singing. The voice lands when it’s shaped by the character’s need — by breath, tension, and impulse — not when it’s sanitized into something pristine.
YOUR IMPERFECTIONS ARE SIGNALS
A crack in the voice doesn’t always mean something went wrong. Sometimes it means you were actually invested.
A self-tape that drifts from your original plan doesn’t always mean you lost control. Sometimes it means you were thinking in real time.
A headshot isn’t meant to be a static, perfect image. It’s a snapshot of who you are in this moment, asymmetries and all.
Those details aren’t flaws. They’re signals of life.

Perfection doesn’t just affect performance. It affects behavior.
Actors wait to send the perfect email. Wait to feel ready. Wait to have the perfect materials. And in that waiting, they lose opportunities.
The actors who build relationships and momentum are the ones who act before everything feels complete.
