UNTIL YOU CAN’T GET IT WRONG

Two ideas keep coming up with actors lately: the difference between getting it right once and being able to do it every time, and the gap between what you expect of yourself and what your preparation actually supports. In a competitive industry, consistency isn’t a bonus. It’s the job.

 

PRACTICE UNTIL IT CAN’T BREAK

Actors often aim for the moment it “works.”

I’m a Broadway audition coach, and that’s not the bar professionals use.

Anyone can land a note, a beat, or an audition once. That’s not mastery. That’s a single data point.

What matters is whether it holds under pressure.

Professionals don’t stop when it works. They keep going until it can’t fall apart.

PRESSURE REVEALS YOUR BASELINE

There’s a reason the room can feel different from rehearsal.

The reader is off. The pianist is too fast. The energy is cold.

In those moments, you don’t rise to your expectations. You default to your preparation.

If the work isn’t built deeply enough, your body won’t invent solutions on the spot. It will revert to whatever you’ve trained.

BUILDING A RELIABLE INSTRUMENT

Consistency comes from repetition that’s varied and intentional.

Run the material until it lives in your body, not just your memory. Practice your song in multiple ways so you’re not locked into one version. Work your lines until they hold even when your attention is split.

The goal is to remove fragility. The work should survive distraction, adjustment, and change.

IT’S NOT JUST THE PERFORMANCE

This principle extends beyond the scene or the song.

Your book, your materials, your communication, your mindset — all of it needs the same level of care.

Professionals don’t wait for ideal conditions. They build systems that hold up in less-than-ideal ones.

FROM CONTROL TO TRUST

At a certain point, the goal of practice shifts.

It’s no longer about trying to control every detail. It’s about building enough repetition that you can release control.

When the work is that ingrained, you stop performing it. You start living inside it.

That’s where flexibility shows up. That’s where adjustments become possible.
